This section's primary task is receiving and dispatching emergency responses for medical and fire assistance in the unincorporated areas of the county. It gives medical pre-arrival instructions in a continuing endeavor of providing an elevated level of care. In times of natural disaster and/or mass casualty emergencies, the section is responsible for coordinating all operations. In addition, the section currently is the after-hours contact for various county agencies.

This section administers emergency preparedness functions. It plans for and conducts emergency operations designed to prevent or limit the effects of natural disaster or enemy attack upon the population; assists local government agencies in developing programs for continuity of city and county governments under disaster conditions; coordinates local, state and federal disaster plans and operations.

» Hillsborough County Fire Rescue provides emergency ambulance service at the paramedic level to all of unincorporated Hillsborough County, and the cities of Temple Terrace and Plant City. EMS operates 24 ambulances, and each ambulance is staffed with professional paramedics who are certified in accordance with county and state regulations.

Paramedics are trained in the latest pre-hospital care techniques and are provided state-of-the-art equipment in order to handle any medical or traumatic emergency. EMS has close working relationships with all hospitals in the county to assure continuity of patient care. Medical transportation by helicopter is available through a cooperative agreement with the county s two trauma centers. EMS works with private and volunteer services to insure the proper functioning of the entire emergency medical services transportation system.

EMS conducts a monthly class and lecture on cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the public. For information, call 272-6600.

9-1-1 Emergency Telephone Operations administers the 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone system, serving as a liaison between the County, equipment vendors and participating agencies, and educating the public about its proper use in emergencies.
